PCIe Gen5 SSD Listed By Japanese Retailer and YES it’s expensive

Japanese retailer, Kakaku, has now listed (and removed) CFD Gaming’s PCIe Gen5 SSDs, with the 1 TB variant starting at a pricey $400 US. For those early adopters of the new PCIe Gen 5 standard, this is a hefty price to pay for the latest M.2 solutions. CFD Gaming’s PCIe Gen5 SSDs offer up to 10 GB/s Read and 9.5 GB/s Write speeds, 1500K IOPs, and a 3-year warranty. Not to mention, the SSDs are equipped with an active cooler featuring a beefy heatsink and a fan in the center for optimal cooling. The SSDs come in three flavors, 1 TB, 2 TB, and 4 TB.

Listing Removed

The prices of the SSDs listed by Japanese retailers appear to be quite high, even when taking into account the taxes included in the price lists. For example, the 4 TB variant of the Samsung 990 Pro is $1100 US more expensive than the current list price. Even if the taxes are excluded, these prices are still much higher than those of existing Gen4 SSDs. The only explanation for this could be the preliminary listings.

  • 4 TB – 57420 Yen ($1600 US)
  • 2 TB – 114840 Yen ($800 US)
  • 1 TB – 229680 Yen ($400 US)

It was expected that the Phison E26 controller-based SSDs would be released alongside the AMD Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs in September, but the launch has been delayed. As of December, no products have been officially released in the US or EU regions. However, it is anticipated that the first official products will be unveiled at the CES 2023 show floor and released by January 2023. Intel and AMD both support the PCIe Gen5 standard, and Phison has made AMD its official partner to introduce the new Gen5 SSDs on the AM5 platform.
